Description of "Deceptive Virtuosity"
(Abstract)

Deceptive Virtuosity is a guide for listening to classical music; basically, what things one can listen for in the pieces, what they mean and how can we understand them. Challenging the idea that classical music is difficult to listen to, the goal of this project was to find a guided listening approach, using curated repertoire as case studies. The intention was to uncover the magic of the music together with the genius ideas from the greatest and most well-known composers in the world of classical music, combining historical facts and anecdotes in an engaging narrative. The title “Deceptive Virtuosity” refers to the nature of the repertoire used as case studies for this research, all seemingly virtuosic pieces on the surface but each having a deceptively simple idea underneath.

Deceptive Virtuosity is a book meant to accompany a performance. The book is written as a conversation between a piano student and his professor; the student has many questions while learning and practicing his pieces, and turns to his teacher in hopes of receiving answers. As the conversation unfolds, new ideas and new approaches to the music start to develop, showing a continuous thread of innovations from the past and throughout the ages. The answers from the character of the professor are based in academic research, focusing mainly on analysis and combined in part with personal interpretative opinions of the author. The book aims to present research in a style that is adapted for more accessibility.

01

Project creation

The "Deceptive Virtuosity" I made this project when I study at 4th year at Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, Thailand. This is one part of Graduate Recital. We want to make something that will be useful for the musician in next generation and for other people with our knowledge and experience which we gain in the 4 years in university.

02

Concept & Purposing

This project is a one way for let the people to attend in classical music easier. We often heard something like classical music is complicated, hard to listen or understand. So this project will give you a way to know what you have to do when you listen with classical music.

Repertories selection

The repertories when choose with show a lot of virtuosic skill and some works that people always think that is hardest works. But all of them you can got the main point of the pieces if you know how to catch it.

04

Working process

- We started from plan in project concept together with repertories selection.

- Then we learn and make a researching in works. Study the elements in pieces.

- At the time during working on pieces researching we decide to present the project in style of the book.

- Now we have more enough information for the first step (make a book draft), then we start to draft a book content.

- Again, we have to study the book example and at last we choose to make a dialogue in book and created a story.

- Then when we ready, we start to write a book with everything that we work before. About the book writing, the challenging is we have to think in two way or like a be a two person in the same time, one need to ask and another need to answer. Also about the language, need to be easy for read.

- Until now we finished in 1st chapter and another will finish after new year.

** Because we need to recheck again about the relation and transition or find what we have to remove or add more.
